Census Bureau Introduces New Interactive Mapping Tool along with Latest American Community Survey Statistics

The U.S. Census Bureau released Census Explorer, a new interactive mapping tool that gives users easier access to neighborhood level statistics. The mapping tool uses updated statistics from the 2008-2012 American Community Survey (ACS), which were also released today.

The new application allows users to map out different social, economic and housing characteristics of their state, county or census tract, and to see how these areas have changed since the 1990 and 2000 censuses. The mapping tool is powered by American Community Survey statistics from the Census Bureau’s API, an application programming interface that allows developers to take data sets and reuse them to create online and mobile apps.

The tool allows users to look at the following eight statistics from the American Community Survey:

  • Total population
  • Percent 65 and older
  • Foreign-born population percentage
  • Percent of the population with a high school degree or higher
  • Percent with a bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Labor force participation rate
  • Home ownership rate
  • Median household income

In addition to these characteristics, more than 40 social, economic and housing topics are now available through the American Community Survey statistics for all communities in the nation, regardless of size, down to the block group level. For example, health insurance coverage statistics are now available for the first time at the neighborhood level.

For more information on the American Community Survey please contact Noemi Mendez at noemi.mendez@census.gov or call the Philadelphia Regional Office at 215-717-1820

The Women’s Bureau is committed to reducing barriers that inhibit or prevent women from getting and keeping better jobs, and we recognize that some women may face more barriers than others.

To raise awareness about the uphill battle that many women of color face when trying to support themselves and their families, we recently published fact sheets about the economic status of women of color.

The fact sheets provide a snapshot of the current racial and ethnic disparities occurring in wages, unemployment, and educational attainment, and the interconnected effects of these factors on the larger populations of working women of color.

While you’re on our site, take a look at our updated Data & Statistics page, where you can find interesting facts and figures about women in the workforce, including earnings, education, unemployment rates, and more.

For more information about your equal pay rights and what we’re doing to close the wage gap, please visit the Equal Pay sites at the Department of Labor and the White House.

Do Small Businesses Need to Worry About Cyber Security?

Tameka Montgomery, SBA Official

Did you know that cyber security is now one of the most debated topics in the world, mostly because all daily business is conducted over the internet?  Hacking in to restricted files and stealing private data are common examples of a breach in cyber security.

SBA is offering a free online course to help you protect your business information online. Cyber Security for Small Businesses will help you to avoid breaches, measure your vulnerabilities, and use best practices to protect your business and your customer information.
President Obama designated the month of October as the National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NSCAM), now in its 10th year. It is crucial that as a small business owner you are aware of the importance of cyber security as well as the risks involved in posting your business data online.
Do not assume that your business is not at risk:

CNN reports nearly half of the data breaches that Verizon recorded in 2012 took place in companies with less than 1,000 employees.
A Symantec report showed that 31% of all attacks in 2012 happened to businesses that had less than 250 employees.
A different Symantec report   showed cyber-attacks were up 81% in 2011.

There a many small business owners that run a large part of their business over the Internet, without any security features. As a business owner, you should understand that even with the advantages of taking your business online, certain risks come along with it too.

And small businesses are not the only ones at risk. Recent headlines told of a hacker arrested for compromising federal employee and service member information. And if government data can be hacked, small businesses undoubtedly are not exempt from hacking.

Cyber Security for Small Businesses will help you learn more about the security principles you should keep in mind when online, as well as the ways you can protect your information and networks in case of a cyber-attack. Other factors, like creating contingency plans, setting up firewalls and creating backups are all part of the training and information that you will learn.

More than a 1,000 small business owners have taken part in computer security workshops hosted by SBA in partnership with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). The online course is an extension of the workshops, making the resources more accessible for small business owners, and brings specific techniques to improve your information security practices right to you.

SBA’s resource partners -- SCORE, Small Business Development Centers, Women's Business Centers, Veterans Business Outreach Centers and Innovation Clusters are also hosting training sessions to help business owners reduce their online risks and be aware of cyber security threats.

Take the time to be sure that your business is prepared.  Take the free online course, visit your local SBA office or mentor, check out the Department of Homeland Security’s Stop.Think.Connect. resource page, or brush up by reading these quick tips on cyber security.

The DOL Newsletter - October 24, 2013:American Women

United States Department of Labor: 1913-2013 - 100 Years. Then, Now, Next.
That was the title of the groundbreaking report issued 50 years ago this month that represented the deepest study of women in the workplace conducted to that date. The President's Commission on the Status of Women, the body that produced the report, was established by executive order of President John F. Kennedy. The woman behind the scenes, whose energy and determination convinced Kennedy to sign the executive order (the text of which she wrote herself), was Esther Peterson, assistant secretary of labor and director of the Women's Bureau. It was Peterson who urged President Kennedy to appoint Eleanor Roosevelt (whose husband appointed the very first woman to the U.S. Cabinet, our own Frances Perkins) as the chair of the commission. Sadly, Eleanor Roosevelt did not live to see the fruits of her work when the commission sent its final report to President Kennedy on Oct. 11, 1963, but she was optimistic that it signaled a major step forward in promoting opportunity for women. "Because I anticipate success in achieving full employment and full use of America's magnificent potential," she said before her death, "I feel confident that in

the years ahead many of the remaining outmoded barriers to women's aspirations will disappear." The report was conceived as an "invitation to action," and it outlined many recommendations for achieving equal opportunity in the workplace in areas such as education, employment and legal protections. Today, the department's Women's Bureau keeps the spirit of the commission alive, working to ensure that, as Kennedy put it, "women everywhere will have it within their power to develop their potential capacities to the maximum."
